Upcoming Fights-Updated 3/19/98 (Bill)

3/19/98: Vuyani Bungu fights again May 16, on what's turning out to be a
big night for Voodoo. The Tapia-Romero rumor has died a very quiet death
so I have removed it from the schedule. Check out some very intriguing
fights on the TBA list. Tapia, Hopkins, Lopez, and Johnson show up today
with these prospects. And wouldn't it be nice if the powers that be at HBO
combined the Hamed and Jones fights onto one card rather than have them a
week apart? I don't think it will happen, though, since Hamed is scheduled
to fight in England. And why, oh, why, does Akinwande get a shot at
Holyfield?

3/18/98: Mosely and Stevie Johnston are on the dance card, maybe for the
last time this season, in mid-May. The U's are going to the whip, folks,
in their bid to repeat as champs. The Erik Morales and Genaro Hernandez
fights have been moved from April to May, a day after the roster move.
(Tough break for EBOLA. Camp sources say Morales would have been dropped
had he fought, as scheduled, in mid-April.)
Sondergaard and Larsen both have new, significantly weaker, opponents
for this weekend's card in Denmark. (I made a few calls, told them Kamau
was too tough for Soren.)
Surprisingly, David Tua has another date, April 18, listed just today
against a TBA. That may mean his May 30 HBO opponent won't be all that big
a deal.

3/16/98: Sondergaard has a weekend showdown with welterweight David Kamau.
Danish sources say that he no longer can make the weight at 140 so he will
try his luck at 147. Add Mads Larsen to the all-House card in Aarhus and
the miracle season for IHOP continues . . . See news item below.
****THE CALZAGHE FIGHT IS OFF!!!!!**** See news item below.
Keith Holmes is out of prison and back in the ring on May 2. Another TGKO
fighter in trouble with the law. I'd like to say I'm surprised, but . . .

News and Rumors

3/16/98: Injury forces Calzaghe out of title defense
     Copyright © 1998 Agence France-Presse
LONDON (Mar 13, 1998 - 11:18 EST) - Britain's Joe Calzaghe was Friday
forced to pull out of his WBO super-middleweight title defence against
Juan Carlos Gimenez of Paraguay in Cardiff on March 21.
The Welshman said he had suffered a damaged wrist in sparring
last Monday and an X-ray had revealed a damaged ligament and swelling,
necessitating complete rest.
Calzaghe, 24, won the vacant title by out-pointing Chris Eubank
in Sheffield last October and beat Croatian Branco Sobot in three rounds
at Cardiff's International Arena in January in his only defence -- taking
his record to 24-0.
Calzaghe had predicted he would be the first man to stop Gimenez,
a 37-year-old veteran of 59 contests.

3/16/98: Reliable sources within the IHOP camp in Denmark report that
Soren Sondergaard has shocked the world once again by vacating the IBC
Junior Welterweight Title. This weekend he fights Welterweight David
Kamau for the vacant IBC welterweight belt. The only possible conclusion
to draw from this turn of events is that the ultimate battle, Sondergaard-
de la Hoya, looms for the Fall . . .

3/9/98 --- The following is from a Web news item... pardon their typos
but know that the result comes as no surprise to management at EBOLA,
which continues to refurbish and rejuvenate the stable through the
benefits of its trade of Lopez for Liles and four players to be named
later.

A fight refusing a definite result was the equally anticipated WBC/WBA
Strawweight bout between Roberto Lopez and Rosendo Alvarez. At the end of
the seventh round in the fight, Alvarez opened a nasty cut on Lopez's right
eye via use of the head. Such was the severity of the gash that come the
end of the round the ring side doctor called for the fight to end. Both
men were to take their belts home with them as the judges scored the fight
- 67-64 Lopez, 68-63 Alvarez and 66-66 the draw.

3/6/98
WBC Middleweight champion Keith Holmes was arrested on Thursday night
after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Washington. (This
follows postponement of Holmes-Cherifi fight in France due to delay of
Tiozzo-Terry Ray from original March 21 date.) Cherifi dropped 12
round decision to Robin Reid in his last fight -- this may have been
the fight that got Reid hospitalized. It was Cherifi's only attempt at
168 lbs...(from Rich)

3/5/98: The Whitaker-Quartey fight is off!!! Whitaker, according to ESPN
(see article below) has failed another drug test. Pernell, in a prepared
statement, blames leadership at Rock Box in general and the presence of
known Thai druglord Saman "Honeyman" Jatourong.
Beside that, there is not much new. Michael Grant will fight very
tough Larry Donald on the HBO heavyweight night in May. Donald has been
in there with the best of them and his only loss has come by decision
against Riddick Bowe in 1994. This could be a career-breaker for the
loser (Donald) . . .

NORFOLK, Va. -- Pernell Whitaker apparently tested positive for drugs last
week, putting in doubt his April 25 fight with WBA welterweight champion Ike
Quartey, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
Whitaker's co-manager, Shelly Finkel, said he was informed by Whitaker's
lawyer that the boxer failed a drug test, the newspaper reported in its early
Thursday editions. A second source, who was not identified, confirmed the
positive result.
The lawyer, Pat English, however, said it was too early to make any statement
about the test.
"I don't have information as of yet," English said. "We're waiting it out to see
what the situation is."
Whitaker, 34, could be suspended for six months automatically if the test was
positive.
Lou DiBella, the vice president of HBO Sports, which had planned to broadcast
the Las Vegas fight, said he had received no official word on Whitaker's test.
But he added that he didn't expect the fight to happen.
"We are proceeding as if it is off," DiBella said.

Very quietly (like Zipay), IHOP is extending a record that will be very hard to beat
in the future: 11 consecutive wins to start the season. Let's end the drama right now
and award Manager of the Year honors to the illustrious Bill "Agile and Elusive" Gillard.
I mean, he got the best fighter in the world for Robin "Now I've Got Plenty of Time To"
Reid. And, oh yeah. Marco Rudolph, Olympic Silver Medalist, will anihilate Artur
Grigorian whose career is in jeopardy, my sources say, due to a chronic shoulder injury
that has robbed him of what little power he had. . .

Nazarov? Anyone who picks him up would have a dead shot at being BLOOD champion.
I mean, number one with a bullet! And a couple to spare!

I am ready, willing, and able to make a deal come roster-move day. I currently have
Rock Box's floating roster move, to use either now or in May (currently it is the #2 pick),
and am willing to package that with a fighter to move down, trade fighter for pick or otherwise.
Orzubek Nazarov, undefeated lightweight champion of the world, is available. Let me know. (BG)

Somebody come up with a way to register challenges. I (BG) think it should still be
enough to notify Mike before the opening bell. What should Mike do? Is it enough
for him to call one of us? Respond.
Also, I think I might put these articles that I have been getting from ESPN, etc.,
somewhere else. Or do they belong here? What do you think?

BERLIN -- Graciano Rocchigiani, beset with a high fever, withdrew from his
WBC light heavyweight title fight against Michael Nunn only six hours before the
bout Saturday.
The match, for the title vacated by Roy Jones Jr., was tentatively rescheduled for
March 14 at Berlin, Nunn's promoter said.
"I'm devastated," said Nunn, the WBC's No. 1 challenger. "I've fought sick
before. There's nothing in the world that would have kept me out of the ring
except death."
The Rocchigiani camp said the WBC's No. 2 challenger was visited by a doctor
who diagnosed the fighter with a temperature of nearly 102 degrees.
Nunn (52-3) had hoped the fight would propel him into big money fights he
never had while he was IBF middleweight and WBA super middleweight
champion.
Rocchigiani (39-4-1) relinquished the IBF super middlewight title without
defending it in 1989 and withdrew from two other title fights before agreeing to
face Nunn.
"I understand that's his reputation, but I can't imagine he'd pull out of this fight
other than being sick," Sam Goossen, Nunn's promoter, said.
Ticket sales for the bout had been slow, despite Rocchigiani's popularity in
Germany, because of fears he might withdraw again.

Undercardinales CHALLENGE Graciano Rocchigiani with Michael Nunn

ANIS "CALL ME ANIS" ROGA, THE MOST OBSCURE BLOOD FIGHTER: A WEEKLY REPORT
sedangkan Herrera, penantang urutan ketujuh.
Menurut dia, Herrera adalah petinju bagus. "Buktinya promotor internasional
menyelesaikan latih tanding sebanyak 120 ronde. (BG)

2/2/98 ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP)-- IBF middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins
retained his crown Saturday night, stopping former two-time champ Simon
Brown in the sixth round of their scheduled 12-rounder.
He unloaded a thunderous right uppercut and then appeared to shove Brown
when he couldn't get his glove back from between Brown's gloves. Brown,
woozy from the punch, fell to the floor, smashing the back of his head against the
canvas.
He got up at the count five, but Hopkins (34-2-1) quickly moved in to knock
you his opponent. With Brown's back to the ropes and his face in his gloves,
Hopkins took target practice. He hit Brown about 20 times, including several
hard shots to the head, before referee Rudy Battle stopped it at 1:00 of the sixth
round.
When the fight ended, Hopkins, 31, of Philadelphia, was ahead on all three
cards. Judges Joseph Pasquale, Bill Graham and William Hutt all had it 50-45.
Brown (47-7) complained that he was pushed on the knockdown, but said he
wasn't ashamed.
"I showed the world. I still got it," he said. (BG)

El Diablo es mas macho que Arturo Gatti

1/14/98- The news just keeps getting worse for the undercardinale
camp. This week's "Fight Fax" continues to report on the slow-motion
train wreck that has been this Chicago franchise's draft and add record
since BLOOD began. Tim Austin, fresh from being declared "best
available fighter" by the president of undercardinale productions, Mike,
in November, continues to serve a medical suspension for a shattered jaw
suffered at the hands and fists of Mbulelo Botile in their June fight.
Ironically, the fight was won by Austin when he knocked out then-
undercardinale, now IBjefF member, Botile.
Add this to the retirement of first-round draft choice Steve Collins
only moments after he was selected by the undercardinales in August and
the picture that develops is of a camp that had a phenomenal August 1996 draft
(de la Hoya, Lewis, Gatti, Johnston) and has been on the decline since then.
The question is no longer if there will be a major Massacre-sized
pugilistic cleansing in the Second City. It is now just a matter of when
the peasants will flee the villages, and run for their lives for higher ground. (BG)

Quote of the Week:

"The whole Byrd family boxes. I wouldn't be surprised if their dog is a boxer."

           - Roy Jones Jr. (Jonestown Massacre), Byrd-Thunder

Soren Sondergaard speaks:
Rock Box will suffer the fate of the infidel!

Rock Box does not take this pettifogging fool seriously!!!

And yet he will suffer!

At least Rock Box was not involved in the Tyson-Akinwande trade!!!
Yeah, but Akinwande just won a fight...

Rock Box need not concern itself with these piddling morons!

There have been 20 BLOOD updates - Rock Box has spent 12
   of them in the cellar.

The Massacre will head into the Ice Bowl as the top team, regardless
of how many Amsterdam fiascos the so-called "House" can muster.

For those of you still entranced with the "House's" trading skills, go
back and look at the sale of the "House" and the "garden" and the rest
of the farm to get the best-rested fighter in Blood, Ricardo (Where's
my camera cue) Lopez...

According to reliable sources, Terry Norris is on the block...

Jonestown, give Rock Box a call about Friday night...

Where's the commissioner? How can the House, just by fiat and sources "so-called," give Sondergard victories???

I heard that Tapia beat up two kids in a Sunnyside gym the other day--I think I'll give myself 30 points.

IBD must always and everwhere be the ultimate source as to whether a fight happened or not!

This just in: Reliable sources within the Massacre camp
insist there is no truth to the rumor that Chris Byrd has tested
positive for an appealing and marketable personality in the Heavyweight
division.

Ice Bowl XX--don't be left out in the cold--exciting merchandise to come!!!

From ESPN's Top 12 Heavyweights -- Number FIVE --
5. Chris Byrd:

Why not? The kid is young, energetic and impossible to fight. He's the
heavyweight version of Pernell Whitaker, except Byrd's actually a
pleasant fellow. An Olympic medalist as a middleweight, Byrd's picked
up a few pounds since then. He hasn't come close to losing, though his
style is boring, boring, boring, and his opposition has been bad, bad,
bad. Byrd's latest effort was an unimpressive ninth-round TKO of
James Thunder in December, but we'll call it an off-night. Thunder
barely touched him anyway. Byrd may dance his way to the
                 heavyweight title.

Gotti-Manfredy--could be the BLOOD fight of the year!!!

It feels good to be Ice Bowl XIX MVP!
